Operation 'Back-up'
Discussion
Got Mikes S3c in the barn today and eventually up on the ramp. Doesn't look too bad underneath but I wasn't about to prod anything that could even be slightly suspect! I think most of the work is going to be sorting out the engine and finding the cause of the stalling when getting up to temperature. It started today first time and runs for about 2 minutes then begins to 'hunt' then stop. It doesn't want to start after this and will only start again if cranked for about 30-40 seconds and then it only just fires. I did have it running very sweetly for about 5 minutes and thought it was ok when it got to working temperature, but as soon as I turned my back it stopped! Sounded really crisp when it was firing ok though
. Fuel pump is good, spark seems good so I think it's down to a sensor somewhere. My investigations will continue tomorrow..
Move aside...

I have one and there is another (maybe Philpot) which I'm sure would happily be loaned.
I knew there was something else I meant to give you when you picked the car up Terry!not sure if it "does" cat engines, can't see any mention of Lambdas and the like in the fault codes ???
Been off the radar for a while due to huge work commitments, etc, etc.
I think I'm going to give up on this car lark.! I've been trying to sort Mikes silver S3c, which he very generously offered as a ride for the upcoming Eurotour. I've been making progress (although slow I know) but had setback last week when the engine wouldn't fire at all. So.. Yesterday I strip out the fuel pump to find there's no fuel in it!!! Aaahhhhh...
What a plonker.. The simplest things often get overlooked when trying to find something else. Never mind, looking forward to another afternoon troubleshooting.
Looking forward to the trip now..!!

After replenishing the fuel tank with some lovely, fresh BP Ultimate and stripping the fuel pump, filter, inlet valve, etc., etc. I've finally got Mikes S3c running sweet as a nut.. I had an issue with the crankshaft front oil seal leaking very heavily and a very high idle speed, but after scratching my head I found a number of the vacuum pipes on the rocker boxes and inlet plenum were incorrectly connected. I checked the hoses on my car and re-sited/connected them as mine and hey-presto the oil leak stopped, the idle dropped to around 800 from 1400 rpm and she now starts first time. I also cleaned the idle valve and patched up some of the wiring in the engine bay.
Have taken it out for a brake test and general run to see if all is as it should be and, you'll be pleased to hear Mike, it drives really well, has an exhaust that sounds like an angry trombone at around 4000 rpm and has no real rattles or bangs..
I'm having the day concentrating on the interior wiring and getting it an mot which I suppose is relatively important. So, it could be that I am going to be on the S-Club eurotour in an S after all. Fingers crossed
