Morning smile

Driving the S2 into work today I heard a big clonk when going around a right hand bend. Not too worried I continued to work which included some moderately bumpy rural roads. Close to work, when pulling away gently there were a couple of clonks from the rear as the power was first engaged, it felt like transmission or drive train related. I don't like the sound of this. Had a good look under the car front and back at work but not obvious signs. Will check again at lunch.

This is only the third time the car has been used since last year.

Any ideas? Could it be the Diff or Diff mounting. Not looking forward to the 30 mile drive home tonight.

Difficult to be specific.

Could be broken spring? can be very hard to spot if it's only the last coil that's snapped off and the broken ends are rubbing as you go over bumps.

failed bush in one end of a damper?

but if it's happening as you engage the drive then I would start with
driveshaft CV joints
the diff mountings
worst case - bent or broken trailing arm allowing the wheel to move initially before the drive is taken up.

CV joint scratchchin

Propshaft UJ scratchchin

Your initial "when cornering" comment is classic CV symptom?

Have you tried a gluten-free diet?

Seriously, as per the above two posts, also Dave Lynch had similar last year, and it was due to the two rear diff mount bolts coming out of the diff casing. It needs the fuel tank out to replace them, also worth replacing the mounts whilst you're at it, as the rubber parts can become unbonded from the metal part of the mount.

Also check that all of your wheelnuts are tight and are actually holding the wheels tight against the hubs.
I recently fitted some nice shiny new nuts but they had less depth of thread than the old ones and were bottoming on the studs before the actual wheels were tight.
When driven, it sounded like a CV or propshaft U/J had failed.
Problem solved by fitting wheel spacers.

Let us know what you find. Good luck,
Glen

Well had a good look under the rear, nothing seems out of the ordinary. There are signs of oil seepage from the diff oil seals on both CV joints, some oil has been flung around as you would expect, off side is worse than the near side, but no signs of major oil loss. CV joints and boots appear intact, no play in the drive shafts. Can't really see the propshaft UJ, but managed to give the prop a wiggle but no obvious movement. Been for a short run, and all seems fine, so I am going to chance the M25/A1 run home tonight, AA card at the ready.

I'll be the slow poke TIV doing 45 behind all the lorries - doh

Thanks for your suggestions, will have to get the car up on ramps and take a better look sometime.
