Not had time for a proper look round yet but have noticed this little thing ( solenoid, valve?) amongst a tangle of pipes and quality wiring, I think one or more of the pipes go off to a "black box" (carbon cannister?) in the boot.

Any ideas what it is, what it does scratchchin

Feeds through to the carbon canister in the boot. Take it off and there is a direction of flow arrow on the top. I had same thoughts as you Mike and I believe its intention is to open when required to purge system through the carbon canister all part of emissions control. http://www.fordopedia.org/parts-catalog/24-29-v6/B...

Why would an S3c need a carbon canister? Shirley it predates cataclysmic converters?

Anthony, the Carbon canister is for automobile evaporative emission control system and is to block or capture sources of vaporized hydrocarbons (petrol) and prevent their release into the atmosphere. Somewhere in USA (California?) they reckoned SMOG was the result??

This was a "prelude" to European use of Cataclysmic Convertors and they are not linked - other than to be another "thing-to-go-wrong"..........!!

AIMVHO when I did 3-years in US and where I saw all this Crap in the engine compartments - now it's all moved across the "pond". 8-))

Thanks Trev - another nugget for my knowledge banks. teacher
I was told that my carbon canister was surplus to requirements because I had decatted, so I drew the wrong conclusion.
Mine has been recycled, and replaced (in that location) with a remote clutch servo, to reduce the strain on my poor aching left foot.

Sorry its OT, but a Remote clutch servo, now that's an interesting mod?

Must get to the Eastern side sometime this year??

Sorry OP. Trev

That's exactly what it is. Incidentally a split in the hose between that solenoid and the carbon canister is a right pain to find - engine runs fine, purge valve opens and introduces air leak, valve closes, problem goes away by the time you try to diagnose it...

Funnily enough I'm toying with the idea of putting them, the lambda's and all the necessary associated catalyst stuff on "mine" scratchchin

Mike - have you tested the carbon can solenoid thing?

Been messing with the plumbing on my S3C and tried to test the carbon solenoid. If I connect it to 12V it clicks but I still can't blow through it so wondering if it's actually working.

No I haven't Gary, not got around to doing anything with the silver one yet, weather has been so nice I've been out or tinkering with the other two smile
