My battery has died but it's lasted ever since I bought the car in 06
To my mind, it would make sense to go for something a bit heavier duty than the standard fitting (I think) as I have no intention of selling the car. Is that sensible?
Do people have any suggestions as to what to buy please?
Thank you

Lol
So, one of these looks OK?

I can see a cheaper variant but I imagine it may be better to go with (what should be) a better quality product?

i just replaced my battery on my v8S and i would highly recommend buying a new one with a raised cranking amperage over the original. My old one had 520Amp cranking, and i replaced it with 600Amp cranking. My original one was perfectly fine, but the extra starting amperage spins the motor over quicker, in turn it starts quicker too. It still has the same 75Amp spec but with increased cranking ooomph.
ps anything higher than 75Amp or with higher than 600cranking amperage, the battery is physically bigger. Which the space in the boot will accomodate, but because the rear body steps out to clear the fuel tank, this restricts the access to the battery space. Anything bigger would just not squeeze through.
hope that helps.

the rotational speed of a starter motor doesnt rotate the engine oil pump sufficiently to circulate the engine oil around the engine until it actually fires up and runs at tickover rpm. You are also running the risk of flooding the spark plugs. And potential damage to internal workings due to lack of appropriate oil and coolant circulation.
If you disconnect the coil and run the starter the oil pressure guage shows pressure.
Whether this improves lubrication at start up is up for question but for me this can't do any harm.
I've always let a rebuilt engine run a bit before letting it fire.
Maybe I'm not right here, just seemed to make sense doing it that way.

tell you what, take the oil pressure sender out and look down the hole while cranking
The oil filter on the V6 engine screws onto the block "sideways", on the earlier Essex V6 it is almost upside down, when doing oil and filter on both my cars (S3 now has a remote filter) it would be very messy to try and pre-fill the oil filter so I would disconnect the feed to the fuel pump or injectors and crank over until oil light went out (I have fitted low oil pressure lights to both cars).
The filters fill up and the low oil pressure light goes out, at cranking speed.... The oil pump is definately pumping!
Going back to my earlier comment I am suggesting crank crank crank brmmmm rather than crank brmmmm but not winding it over for ages before firing

Time to get back to battery selection ......

Got one of these on the S3 V6, fits the battery tray nicely and has more than enough grunt.

Order on line rather than pop in as it's a lot cheaper doing this. But it's a good make unless they list Bosch !!
The same company has a page on a well known auction site where the same one is considerably cheaper.Edited by RayTVR on Monday 20th January 11:28
