Mirror Mystery
Discussion
I'm looking to buy an S3 (or possibly an S4 if one turns up), and I'm keen to find one with the additional lights in the bonnet and the mirrors from the Citroen CX. Unfortunately, I just can't seem to pin down any pattern as to when these are fitted. I've read about some S3s being fitted with S2 mirrors, and I'm wondering whether these are the kind of flatter non-colour-coded items.
Can anyone unravel this mystery for me and, if I got an S3 with the older style (?) mirrors, how feasible would it be to fit the CX mirrors in their place?
Cheers
Richard

Hi Richard, welcome to the 's' forum......
If you want driving lamps and citroen mirrors then you are looking for an S3C (or S4 as you say, but I think they are v. rare...) The 'C' bit stands for Catalyst, which as the name implies means it has cats.
For the full info on which model is which, (and it does get really confusing, 'cos TVR seemed to mix'n'match at will back then!!) buy Steve Heath's book on the 'S' series cars. It states what to look for when buying, and shows you how to look after the car once you have bought it. Definitely money well spent.
There you are shpub, a free plug!!!
Good luck with your search Richard, take your time...

Thanks for the info Chin Up. I think I'll take your advice and order the book.
I took a look at an S3 today, but I think the price was too high for the condition. I also think the plan of looking at a number of cars before buying is a good one. They're so different to drive than a 'normal' car, that I reckon you need to establish a good benchmark before making a choice.

I wouldnt imagine the mirror swap is a big deal, it's a mod I'm looking to do on my S3, as the S2 type mirrors arnt much cop really.
It isn't quite as easy as you would think as the mirror sits in a recess and has a screw thread boss bonded in place. Might be easier if the car is an S3 to swap the doors... either that start practising a lot of GRP.

If you end up making the swap, I'd be interested to know how you get on in terms of mounting points etc.
I've noticed that some S3s are advertised with electric mirrors. I know that when the mirrors were used on the CX originally they were electric, so I guess that would tie in. If that's the case, the electrics could prove an interesting part of the upgrade!

Doesn't mean they are Citroen mirrors though as the other mirror styles were available in electric form as well.

Woah there, the S3C and S4 are different beasts.. the S4 has that lovely bonnet with the side vents I want one...
Hello everbody, I am new to this forum.
I am a bit confused about the mirror issue, my S3 has electric mirrors, which I thought were Citoren CX, but now I am not sure. They have a series of grooves around the body and are painted body colour.
As far as bonnets go, mine is an S3 (not S3c, but the original TVR order form specifies S3c bonnet as option. It has the spot lamps and vents along the groove between the headlanp "wing" and the engine cover a bit like the Chimera, but not so pronounced.

Welcome Roger,
Your mirrors are the CX type and the bonnet is the same as most S3Cs and all S4s.
Cheers,
JSG.
