Hi all,

I have been looking on the forum about speedo cables and can not see any mention of what one fits a S1 V6 2.8 1988, some say a Capri MK2 is the same ? My cable comes from the gearbox on the drivers side, it has snapped at the gearbox end so exhaust off again.
Can you just replace the inner cable ?

Many thanks,

Paul.

Does this look anything like (check shape of end fittings carefully)?

Inner cable can be replaced, from my experience (many years ago) it will pull out from the speedo end

Thanks Phill,

I did look at these but they are all too short, mine is over 1900mm without the bit thats left in the gearbox, all the Capri ones are 1753mm.

Speedy Cables could another option (but I've heard they don't always live up to their name).

Speedograph Richfield made one up for me earlier in the year, although my S1 has a 2.9 engine transplant to a type 9 gearbox so I'm not sure if it's the same as your set up. Also, I gave them the wrong size attachment for the back of the speedo and had to cut the nut (it is quite a soft/thin piece of aluminium or something), and squeeze it closed with a jubilee clip. The length seemed good and it works! Happy days

Looking at the receipt, it was a flexible drive 6230-2500mm and cost 30 quid inc vat/delivery

How much has broken off? from memory there is about an inch of squared cable each end?

Very long time ago but I seem to recall when the cable broke on my Escort (mk1 "homemade" Mexico) there was still some square bit left at the gearbox end and I got away with pushing the little collar thing at the speedo end along a bit so there was just enough square bit still sticking out to catch whatever it catches in the speedo, this gained me enough cable to similarly just catch the square hole in the speedo dive gear at the gearbox end.

If it's holding you up from getting an MOT or anything could be worth a try scratchchin

Sierra one is 210 cm but the end would need modding I intend to do a 'pcashman' and cut off the plastic bit and crimp it on to the Speedo with a jubilee clip

Thanks all for your help.

In the end David Gerald TVR had one on the shelf new £30 + vat and should get it today, he stated that all the Ford ones have the wrong speedo connection and now have to be made up to fit, you can just replace the inner cable but for the cable to break there must be a problem with the outer a kink or twist that had worn the inner.
As the weather is just right for going out in the TVR I do not think I will be under the car this weekend, just have to mind the speed cameras !

Once again thanks,

Paul.
