Fuel tank and swirl pot

I've had my fuel tank welded in the past because of pin holes in the top of the tank due to corrosion. This seemed to fix the problem but I have now noticed a distinct smell of petrol and noticed what looks like petrol seeping out of the swirl pot at the bottom.

So I would like to remove the tank and make sure it is not leaking especially as it's near the exhaust.

If the tank is leaking what options do I have to replace it ?

If the swirl pot is leaking can this be replaced or is it part of the fuel tank ?

Old post but a couple of suggestions here.

Swirl pot is all part of the tank but you may have a removeable cap (held in same way as fuel gauge sender), if your lucky it may just be that which is leaking/rusted?

Hi Chris, this may have nothing to do with your problem, but may'be it's worth a look. If you go in the boot and move your carpet you will see the petrol hose between filler & tank, large jubilee clip top & bottom. My clip's had worked lose and petrol was running between hose and pipe connection and down the side of the tank onto the road. I noticed this walking back to the car at the petrol station as well as the obvious smell. Might as well you check the clip's.

Check that blanking plate and sealing ring is up to scratch

I did the POR15 treatment method about 2.5 years ago. At first I was well chuffed with it, but not so now.

I've already had to twice take the cap of the little swirl pot and remove strips of the POR15 that had come away from the tank and were clogging up the fuel pick up. This was actually making the car run worse (or not run as the case was) than before I did the treatment.

I've not used the car for about 14mnths after it cutting out on me around the corner from home. When I finally got around to checking the problem it was more POR15 in the fuel pick up.

I think my problem was that I did it in the middle of winter, so I guess the tank wasn't totally dry when I put the POR15 in, so maybe not coated properly.

When I get back from Silverstone next week I will need to check it again, but I'll probably have to look at a new tank over winter.

Unless your car is a "garage queen" I wouldn't go for an alluminium tank, fine in something like a Chimarea where it is in the boot but with an S its going to get sprayed in everything and, short of taking it out, there is no way to clean two sides of it. Alluminium might not rust but it sure corrodes !

I see they offer powder coating but have my doubts how well that would adhere or last particularly around the welds...... or maybe I'm just an old pessimist .

I must admit I assumed it was SS but does look alloy.. Not 100% re Alloy myself either. That said not had experance with either. I believe Dave at radtech is a S owner so perhaps could comemt on how long his has been on or perhaps supply some pics of it now.

my old vw golf mk2 had a hd plastic tank.. Fantastic bends not cracks and was showing hardly any signs of wear when I had it the steel mounting straps were knackered mind.

Doesn't seem to say on the page but the little header I get at the top to show what tabs I have open says " TVR S Fuel Tank Alluminium" (and the welds look "chunky" like alluminium welds)

Thanks for all the advice, it looks like I need to remove the old tank and inspect it to identify where the leak is stemming from. I will keep you posted on what I find.
