HELP PLEASE Windscreen wipers
Discussion
Hi guys could anyone give me any advice please my wipers have packed up on my S1 , at the moment I have not had a look at it, but it appears to be the linkage that has broken somewhere .The driver’s side seems to move the motor but the passenger’s side just freely moves .Does anyone know if they are easy to get out ,repairable or what car they originated from and if so can they still be bought new ? The motor does not appear to be working possible no power, fuse (but everything else on the car appears to work), or burnt it out when it went, I hope to start investigating this week any advice would be gratefully appreciated many thanks in advance Dave
Hi Dave,
My S1 had wiper issues when I first got it, the motor was fine, problem was mainly due to the spindles seizing in their housings. Was able to strip them down with dashboard in place, bit of a struggle though. Take care not to stress the bodyshell when stripping them out.
Layout: Basically a single motor on pass. side drives the n/side wiper spindle via a bellcrank & link rod, and a second longer rod drives the o/side spindle bellcrank. The rods have plastic sockets which can be carefully prised off the balls on the bellcranks.
I had to make up a new spindle guide tube from a brass plumbing fitting as my original alloy one had split in two.
N B.Take care to isolate power to the motor before working on it, because it won't stop for fingers or wrists!

Under dash view of pass. side arrangement.
