Help, around around today? (engine removal)
Discussion
I've got to the stage in removing my engine and g/box from my s3 where everything is off the engine or disconnected and the mounting bolts are loosened and I was about to connect the hoist and I've had an attack of doubt...
Does the exhaust manifolds need to come off the engine to get the engine and g/box out? Looking around it the engine needs to be lifted about 6 inches to get the manifolds to clear the chassis and there isn't the clearance at the back of the engine. So, do I remove the manifolds (I really don't want to do this) so I can slide the engine forwards or do I lift the engine off the engine mounts by half an inch, remove the gearbox mounting plate and lower the gearbox down to give me the clearance and then lift the engine and gearbox with it suspended at roughly 45 degrees?
Any advice on this would be much appreciated.
Thanks for your time,
Mark

That's what I'm doing. By removing the gearbox plate I meant the mounting plate at the back of the gear box and the lowering the back of the gearbox while still connected to the engine so that the front of the engine rises while supported by the crane. Then I'd have the clearance to remove the whole lot out without removing the manifolds.
I'm going to try it anyway, I'll take some pictures as I do it.

Engine out eh!
Whats wrong with it that its got to come out then!
Oh, and those manifolds, load of swearing getting them back on with the engine in, so if its possible to get the engine out with them on I presume the reverse is possible saving all the skin on your fingers. Be interested to here how you get on, and good luck mate.
gadgit.

I lost synchro on 4th so I thought I'd get it fixed and maybe get the g/box recon'd before I sell the car.
I decided not to attempt the removal of the engine until next weekend when a mate is over. It should come out with the manifolds on after having another look over it.
I've been taking photos as I've dismantled the engine and will continue doing so as I take it out and put it back in. When I've finished I'll post them all.
I've been wire brushing the chasis and waxoyling it instead today instead - what a filthy job.

I've got the engine out and the trick is to remove the left valve cover and the distributor, then the gearbox and engine comes out without removing the manifolds. You also have to remove the chassis plate that holds the gearbox mount.
I've taken loads of pictures so when I get time I'll either post them here or put them on a web page somewhere so hopefully they will help anyone else wanting to take their engine and gearbox out.
I'm going for a pint.
