Engine hesitation?

Buggar....... just as she was running well my S3 has developed a random misfire/hesitation while pulling around 3500rpm usually pulling from a roundabout or over taking, no pattern sometimes fine but very annoying when it happens! Have checked plugs, leads, coil, connections etc and can't see anything out the ordinary? Tickover fine and starts on the button. Has anyone on here had this happen to them?

When I say a misfire/hesitation actually loss of power for about 1-2 seconds.

Could be fuel starvation. Have you checked the fuel filter?

Dodgy throttle pot connector?

Happened to me once. Was going to change the HT leads, but gave the above connector a wiggle and fine since. Saved me £100 plus as I was going to upgrade the leads.

Very much like fuel starvation however the fuel filter and pump were replaced 900 miles ago, also there is no uniformed pattern.

haven't ever come across this but will definitely look at the throttle pot connector, cheers.

To be fair, I disconnected the throttle pot to eliminate it as the problem and upon re-connection the symptom has never returned.

This was my problem too, pulled the connectors off to see corrosion on the small pins

I have been reading this with interst Neil as I have sometimes thought that my throttle pot may have a problem.

Occasionally, when I put the accelerator down, the power to the engine can drop momentarily before suddenly kicking back in. Probably not as long as 2 seconds but enough to irritate.

The only issue that stops me looking any deeper is that when I bought the car (exactly one year ago) I can vaguely remember the previous owner telling me that throttle pot was one of the few things he had changed so I have mentally discounted it.

However in hind sight, having seen the poor attempt he made at installing the stainless exhaust, perhaps I should look a bit deeper!!

Hi Graham,

I've had a little spare time this morning so unclipped the throttle pot to see what condition it was in, all looked fairly good however got some cotton wool buds with some white spirits and gave all the connections a clean up, from doing a test drive I'm fairly sure the symptoms have stopped and the car feels a tad more responsive on acceleration..... fingers crossed she stays that way! I've got a 90 mile trip next week to do (weather permitting) so will find out for sure then.
