While I'm going to be tidying up a few bits of my S (see unhappy post of woe earlier today) I thought I should do something about the seal around the windscreen.

Last year I used some Halfords Water Resistant Sealer but it's rubbish. The tube doesn't have a proper small nozzle to dispense it and it comes out as a sort of rubbery sticky gel and ends up going everywhere and looking a right mess.

I need to try something again as I get a bit of water leaking in between the windscreen and the frame.

Anyone know of a better supply of something similar, which I can neatly control to go round the screen - or a rubber sealant trim like the Chimaera has?

Ok, I've been recommended Comma Seek 'n' Seal by just about everybody, but can I get hold of the stuff? No.

Called over 20 independent car accessories shops around me, but none have any.

Anyone know of a shop with stock who would post some to me?

What you really need is a black automotive sealer, something like Sikoflex. This is available from any good paint supplier. You can use it to fill the gap and then smooth out and clean off any excesses with a degreaser solvent (available from same source.

This will leave a nice smooth contoured finish.

Gloves are essential as the black stains will take a few weeks to get of your skin.

It may be easier to take it to your local accident repair centre and get a price for them to do it!!!

Sikaflex is fantastic stuff for semi permanently bonding your screen in place, it dries as a hard but flexible rubber and it's excellent stuff for screens. My screen is in fact bonded in place with this or something very similar, as should be the case with all S series.

Seek 'n' Seal is a fluid sealant in a can with a nozzle and is very good at sealing places where small leaks occur. I've used it around the wiper pindles on the S. Youe should be able to buy it at many B&Q stores and I have seen it in Halfords. I'm sure it's made by Comma?

Both have been around for a number of years now and are proven to work very well.

I am a fan of "Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure", if only for the name alone. But it does do the job.

I too tried in vain to get hold of Comma Seek and Seal. I had some back in the 80's and it worked every time on windscreens, shower screens. My local car spares place tried to get me some more but was told that it is discontinued. I've recently discovered Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure (capt.tolleyltd@btinternet.com)
Tel:020 7924 2817. I've had some fine leaks on a Conservatory Roof and this stuff is every bit as good as the Comma Product. Take a look at their web-site.Hope this is of help.

Ickenham...

I could run you a tube over if you like... or I'll get James who lives in SL3 to pop a tube round to you.

PM me your number?

Wow - old thread.

My solution was having my windscreen broken by a stray stone whilst in Spain! Result was nice new windscreen* smile

  • but unfortunately they damaged the boot (yes, boot!) whilst fitting the screen, so that has needed a re-spray ever since. Such is life.

Well, it's 2022 now and I cannot believe no one has researched using these products to seal up windows.. in my case two cars

Mercedes-benz 500 sec coupé C-126
BMW 528i E39

Both these require a good seal as a stitch in time..

I didn't get on with Sikaflex, for some reason my application didn't silicone dry, stayed kind of the same.. I'll buy it again and try once more.

The second occasion I've applied Seek 'n Seal bought on ebay. It's a clean application. Insert a plastic trim knife under all the rubber seals, clean out old dry seal and apply the Seek 'n Seal liquid silicone as I pull along the trim piece under the rubber.. making sure it's all getting a good squeeze.

Clean up after.. paint the liquid silicone over the rubber surfaces too.. also restored on the window seals too.. might bring them round again..

To tidy up my S3 seal (as it was a right mess).
I used an auto panel seal. It is very similar to Tiger Seal (search for that on eBay) I think it is butyl based, but not sure about that. It sets to a very firm rubber (air activated).
As per a previous comment, wear gloves, and mask up where you want to finish the seal, as it's a bugger to get off.
