Lucas Fault Guide
Discussion
Hi all, The link below to the Lucas Fault Guide guide may be useful.

Lots of people appear to have earth related faults when it comes to starting problems. Years ago, this guide was THE definitive guide to fault finding for starting and charging faults. It uses basic equipment to test what is quite a simple system. Over the years things have got slightly more complex but this guide if followed will give quick and accurate diagnosis.
The volt drop tests outlined under starting system testing is to be highly recommended, I cant recommend this enough... we used to re-train this out among our workshop staff, it will clearly identify faults related to high resistance, especially those normally termed as 'bad' earth issues.
My advice is to be methodical and follow the tests, don't jump about as more than one fault may exist and give false results.
Hope this helps many of the posters with starting problems....all you really need is a good volt meter
Regards
Graham
Just thought that I would add that although this may look 'old hat', our cars still use ACR type alternators, pre-engage starters, and the wiper motors and light circuits are all similar. At the very least reading this document will give some people a basic understanding of electrical systems.

Chris, I mentioned something similar a little while ago, here's a link to explain why you don't need to colour match the replacement smoke to the wiring colour. Of course, TVR used to be ahead of the game in the 70's when they only used black wire in the loom
