MOT failure and steering column needed...so sad

Just wondering if these guys are still the best bet for 1990 S2 steering column http://www.kellybraysteering.co.uk/

Thats a long way from anywhere, the phone number seems to be Liskeard, which I believe is a southern point of Cornwall.
Must be somewhere closer that offers refurbs or exchange replacements.
Someone who knows will no doubt come along soon, but is it not a Ford part?
Or a U/J as I just changed for my MOT.

I've used these guys in the past, really good service. I had to post my bits to them for it to be refurbed.Any advice appreciated guys

Edited to say - as above check the Uj's and the bulk head bearing before refurbing the rack.

There's excessive play in the steering rack. The u/J will be checked tomorrow by my pal. Is the column another TVR Frankensteins monster that's built of many diff bits or is it one unit off an old ford?Cheers

... So its a steering rack you need, not a steering column ?Kiley Clinton in Birmingham are the experts, 0121 772 8000 web links from Google not working for me at the mo. I don't think they do an exchange service on less common stuff like TVR but can usually turn yours around in 24 hours.
Steering column is mainly Ford but there isn't a "complete column" available, it's a matter of replacing whatever is faulty/worn out, usually just a uj or bearing.
If it's play in the rack why do you feel you need a new column?
The "column" is really just a couple of lengths of rod with a thread at one end and grooves at the other. The UJs are the bits that wear (and they're about £20 each and relatively straightforward to fit).
I believe it's a mix of Vauxhall Chevette and Ford (the column) and the UJ does a bit of a conversion to join the two bits.... But i may be wrong so don't just accept that....
I bought a pair of UJs the other week as my top one has quite a bit of play.
Also - as suggested, check the bulkhead bearing. if the wheel moves fore and aft then that's the more likely candidate...

The Rack is a mix of Vauxhall and Ford.Main body and bits being Chevette and track rods Ford, some how "grafted" together hence they are not readily available as a standard Chevette or Escort, for example, item might be.

+1 Did a v good job on mine with a quick turn around. Think it only cost £75 too if my memory serves me correctly. Chim and griff boys rate them highly too for steering rack work. Give them a call and they should see you straight.Edit - just looked through my cars folder for something else and saw that it came in at just over £100.

Phone number is Liskeard but they are in Callington which is just into Cornwall. But they do stuff by mail - quite prevalent on ebay if you look. I have used them and can't recommend them enough (but they are close to me)So after everything being looked at in detail the UJs and Bearings are fine and i do need the rack reconditioned. Will be giving the guys in Birmingham a call tomorrow off the recommendations on here.
One other question guys for the TRV legends amongst you. How easy is it to get hold of training arm bolts & bearings??? My offside trailing arm needs some welding and I may require a few new bits.

The place for the bolts and trailing arm bushes (I guess these are what you mean, the ruber bits round the bolts where the trailing arms bolt onto the chassis) would have been Steve Heath but he had given up trading. Your best bet now would probably be to give David Gerald a call and see if they have any. Wheel bearings are Ford sierra abducted again they will source you a set quickly that will fit. They will cost a premium over sierra units but I can't remember the exact ones required off the top of my head but will probably be the most basic cars with drums.Gordon.
Norman (Gerald-TVR a few posts up) did have a spare set of bolts I was going to have as spares but if you have a need might be worth asking him if he still has them?
The bushes were quite elusive until someone (sorry, I forget who) worked out they are common to something like Land Rover leaf springs?
