Halloween Headlights

Gents,
I've been chasing down an issue I have only noticed recently (due to mainly day driving) so suspect it may have been present since my car returned from the trimmers in August.
Problem: only sidelights come one at both stages of the light stalk. The main H4 bulbs do not come on at all.
Diagnosis: There is a loose plug adaptor in the NS passenger footwell which is clearly meant to go into the dim/dip module. When I make the connection; the main bulbs light up constantly, even with the ignition off and stalk in the off position. The sidelights still respond normally ie. off when the stalk is off despite the main bulbs being lit.
I spoke to my trimmer who said that the connection was not made when he received the car (therefore dim dip module already disconnected by previous owner?). He also found the same 'constant - ON' with it connected so left it disconnected.
Any ideas of how to rectify?
