Okay, I read the bible just before I go to sleep, but it just not very detailled on this topic. There is supposed to be a handbrake adjustment "thing" in the transmission tunnel. Can anyone give me some directions how to find it and operate it. I've been under the S several times, but I never noticed the adjuster.

thanks & greets

Hi Niels

Went through the same exercise myself looking under the car after reading the bible. What you need to do is undo the 2 screws at the rear of the leather console that runs down the centre of the car. This can now be gently lifted and the black storage box removed, you can now put your hand through the hole and reach the plastic adjuster.

That explains why I couldn't trace it. I'll have a go at it tonight!

Thanks for the help!

I managed to adjust the plastic nut on the handbrake cable sheath from under the car. It is a squeeze to get your hand up into the transmission tunnel, but it can be done. You will need to get the car high up though.
Your description of removing the plastic tray and accessing it from above would explain why it is at the top, and not on the other end of the cable which is much easier to get to from under the car.
Well you learn something new every day .
Good Luck

But what do I do with the plastic nut. Should it be turned in some direction ?? Can it be done by hand ?

Cheers!

I asked the garage to do mine at MOT time and it came back to me just the same ....vertical!

It holds the car OK but is a bit of a pain.

I'll take a look at mine now I know how to adjust it.

Cheers,
K

There are actally two nuts together. These have a conical side, one of which inserts into the other DOWN PODIE!!! to lock the adjustment.

The method of adjusting is to lever the two nuts apart using a large screwdriver and then turn the rear nut clockwise (if viewed from the rear). It will not turn unless freed from the other nut. Once it is correctly adjusted, you will need to wind the other nut up to match. As you apply the handbrake, the two nuts will lock together to fix the adjustment.

I did not notice 2 nuts on mine, just one large plastic one that screws along the outer sheath of the handbrake cable. The nut is captive in the chassis bracket, and you wind it so that the sheath moves further away from the handbrake lever to tighten it.

But they all may be different

TonyS2, you are a star. I have spent about an hour my S1 fighting to get access to the adjuster arrangement having read the bible and felt I knew what I needed to achieve but just not how to do it. Then read your post and hey presto done in five minutes. Thanks a ton.

Much easier if you move the adjuster to the other outer cable wink

Just the original modified smile

Which is easy enough to do if you have a removeable nipple!
