Steering Rack - Will It Fit?
Discussion
Bought this at an auto-jumble today. It says Chevette Mk 2 on the label. Can it be adapted to fit my V8S, and if so, how?
Just under 4½ turns lock to lock.
It’s an unused reconditioned unit, the bellows are air-tight but its a bit stiff when trying to pull it from side to side. Should I pull back the bellows and grease the rack or remove the two plates and pour in some gear oil?

It will fit, but...
You either need longer track rod arms with an M14x2.0 thread to accept the Ford track rod ends used by TVR, or you can extend the existing Chevette track rod arms with adapters to cross over to the Ford track rod ends.
Then you need to limit the travel of the rack bar as the Chevette rack has too much. This can be done by making up some nylon spacers to go on the rack bar ends, inside of the track rods. Therefore you will end up with about 3 turns lock-to-lock.
I have noticed that my V8S rack is a quicker ratio (less turns lock-to-lock) than a V6 one. The V6 one had the same ratio as the standard Chevette.
You will probably find that you cannot simply swap your existing TVR track rods on to the Chevette rack because the ends of the rack bar are machined differently.
