Question for a Cologne Guru

Have got both my engines stripped with intent of using the best bits to rebuild from with appropriate machining where required. The good news is units are in good condition although my original engine has clearly done more miles due to wear in the cylinder bore (this one has a lip whereas the other just has marking and no discernable lip). Have measured everything up and there is virtually no wear on either crank, the original Cam has slight wear but the spare engine's is pristine and there is only expected minor wear on all bearing faces. Intent is to rebuild using spare engine block, crank and Cam shaft, new bearings and piston rings, original engine pistons (to ensure balanced pistons) as I sold two of the spare engine psitons to Steve J when I didn't think I'd want them as I only bought the spare for the undamaged sump.

I have one question though, all the pistons are marked on the crown with a number, these are either the number 1, 2 or 3. The numbers bear no relationship to where they are fitted and also do not appear to act as a witness mark. Does anyone know what these markings are or signify?

Thats the beauty - the stamped number not the printed ones, as I said I've got lots of 2s, a couple of 1s and a single 3. Unfortunately it is the "3" I would like to change (slight dink to conrod as I dropped it - I could dress it out but why bother if I can swap it for another good one) but only have one marked "3" so want to make sure substituting a "2" from my spares will not be an issue before I rebuild

Maybe you are worrying about nothing and it's the machine that produced it or something. Can't see pistons being different.
