I used a 13mm open ended on my master cylinder but the slave fitting isn't moving, don't want to bugger the end up, so what size flare spanner do I need? Cheers guys,

Not sure what the size is, but you may be able to take the cylinder off with the pipe attached then you have better axcess to loosen the pipe end. Try threading a ring spanner down the pipe.

I can't see any connection, so it looks like i'll have to unbolt in place. Just bought a snap on 7/16 1/2 combi flare spanner on fleabay, If it dosent fit, i'll get a 10-11mm and 12-13mm flare from halfords.
Would be great to know though.

If you have any spare ring spanners you can sacrifice around the right size grind a slot in the side just wide enough to slip over the brake pipe, then you've made a brake pipe spanner.

I'm guessing you have open end spanners so can't you use them to work out the nut size scratchchin

I know what you are thinking, dumbarse question! did use a 13mm open ended, but seemed to have slight play in it I really don't want to round the head off and as I'm buying a flare, (ordered a 7/16 anyway) I just wanted to get the right one! Didn't know if it was imperial size? I keep seeing 7/16 mentioned in posts.

If 13mm was a bit sloppy 1/2" af sounds good (guess you youngsters only have metric spanners) wink

If yours still has the big gaiter thing covering the hole into the bell housing it comes off by squeezing it in the right place, there is a spring metal clip inside it. Don't think it will come right off as the pushrod from the slave cylinder goes through it?

Once removed the cylinder to bracket bolts can be replaced with cap heads (allen key) to make things easier next time.

Do you have the car jacked up to a decent height to give reasonable access?

Youngster i wish, 46 or as the wife puts it "nearly 50".
Got half the gater off, seen that spring. Car nicely jacked up, can see it all fine, just can't get anything on the back of the bolts to stop them turning,
Sounds good 1/2 the one I've bought
is 7/16 1/2 combi AF, whatever that
means! Yup I'm all metric!
Mike, can you remember, did you take the bracket off to get at those 2 bolts that hold the slave on? If not how the heck did you remove them!!
Cheers again, Mark

If bracket is like in my picture on other thread I'd try taking it off complete. The one in the picture is one I fitted to my Taimar (hence modified pipe), certainly went on / came off complete on that car. The other picture with bolt through the bell housing is either an earlier version or an adaption by someone?

On the S3 maybe I just didn't think of it but removed slave from bracket in situ. IIRC by turning the bolt and letting the nut turn with it there is a position where an open end spanner can be sort of half pushed onto the nut, just enough to wedge it so the bolt can be loosened.

Maybe getting the nuts welded to the bracket once apart would make life easier in the future?
