fuel sender S3

Hi All,new owner.S3 spluttered to a standstill after visiting shopping park.gauge read just under a 1/4 fuel left.topped up -started first turn of key .no problems since.Is this normal to mis read that much or do i have a faulty sender? if faulty where can i find replacement? thanks dave
