V8S Front upper wishbones, which way round?

The upper wishbones on my V8S have the longer arm to the front of the car, is this right?



Picture is of the nearside and therefore front is to the left.

Yes, thats correct. The rear of the upper and lower wishbones are shorter. This also means that the hub will slope slightly rearwards.

Not quite sure why this is, but I guess it has something to do with the suspension geometry.

Castor. The top ball joint has to be behind the bottom one, so that the hub axis is angled and a line through both ball joints hits the ground in front of the centre of the ftont wheels. Too little castor and you have to fight to keep it straight, like a wonky supermarket trolley, too much and you can't turn the bloody thing.

Thanks for the info, can you also tell me which side of the top ball joint the shim should be on? front or rear side

My S3 has two, I put one either side but going back to tvrgit's post I'd try both and see which gives the best "feel" to the steering?

My V8s also has 2, again one goes on either side.

How snug a fit is the ball joint in the wishbone?

Both sides only had one shim in, and the wishbone seems to clamp on to the balljoint arm ok, when I rebuilt it the shim was a clearance / finger push fit, certainly not an engineered fit.
