Diff mounting bushes
Discussion
is the clonking more obvious when using the engine to brake and changing gear etc...? think I may be in the same boat...

PS been thinking about posting about this, but couldn't think of a word to describe the noise.. "Clonking" seems to suit well

Yes,it occurs when going up and down the box. Sometimes there is a knocking noise when I go over bumps - but this might be a different problem.
If you jack up a rear wheel and rotate the wheel back and forth with the handbrake on, you may see the diff rocking back and forth as well - mine does. Looks pretty hairy too!!

I take it by the fact that you think the bushes are worn that it is not just the mounting bolts that are loose?
There have been posts before on the fact that these bolts have just needed tightening up to clear clunks on other Tivs, might be worth a try before you get expensive!
The bible shows the details in this area, if you have a copy, it also state's that the diff is from a V6 Sierra, however it is a TVR so what one ......
I hope this helps.

HarryW,
Thanks, yes a couple of the main bolts were slightly loose, I've tightened them and it seems better. Replacing the mounting bush at the back looks a bit of a swine, so I may wait until winter now...The diff looks like the one in the Sierra manual so I expect it is a Sierra part I'll need. On further investigation it seems the clunk could be coming from one of the driveshafts. I'll check further.

I used to have a clunk that sounds like your problem on my S3. I couldn't find the cause until the diff cradle mount snapped and dropped the whole shebang onto the exhaust. They only cost about a tenner.
Turned out the clunking was due to the diff moving and the mount broke next to one of the bolt holes, just fatigued I suppose. (70000miles)
cheerio.
