S3 indicators not working

I have a 1990 S3 and have had some problems with the indicators/hazards -

I have twice changed the flasher unit and now im unsure if the unit given to me last time is the correct one. of course I stupidly threw the original unit away !

All im getting is a buzzing ???? I therefore assume i am getting power to the unit?

The unit is 3 pin and the numbers on the unit i have are - 49a at the top, 31 on the left and 49 on the right.

Can any body help/shed some light........

Have you checked the fuse? If the flasher unit is buzzing then it's probably not the fuse but best to rule it out before you start pulling other stuff apart.

Do the hazards work ?

If yes I'd suggest the indicator switch stalk could be faulty ?

If no maybe a duff flasher unit ?

Do you have a test lamp or a meter?
Terminal numbers sound right, 49 should be live when ign. on, 49a goes to the switch and last one is earth. Maybe try running a wire direct from there to battery neg?
