Anti roll bar down under?

Rebuilding the front suspension on the S3 and re-installed the anti-roll bar today. Now there is clearance between this and the sump after fitting new engine mounts. I have put the bar in with the ends pointing down, as advised on various threads. Now this is the opposite to the way the bar was before(I have had to change the links around). It does not look like the bar has been removed previously and nothing in the service history to suggest this. So, two questions:

1. Is it possible that it was installed upside down in Blackpool? (I think that I can guess the answer to this !!!!!)

2. Does it affect performance whichever way up?

Not saying this is right but mine's this way up (tried it t'other way, looked wrong)..........
