I only do gas welding and that's a bit close to the petrol tank !

Wondering if I can support tank and drop the bracket off?

Yep can be done Adrian@ replaced my tank cradle without removing petrol tank from the car, TVR Car Parts have new powder coated for £85 I think. Not worthe repairing, shot blasting and powder coating in my obinion.

Tank seemed solid and was spotless inside when I had it off, must be a couple of years ago now, but I have "found" a bit of stainless steel to make some replacement securing straps.

Note if you get one from tvrcarparts it doesn't have the hole in it where the reinforced fuel hose goes up to the fuel pump on the V8.

Make sure you put some drain holes in the bottom of it while it's off if you haven't already done so. They fill up with water and rot out from the inside.

Dropping the tank out as well as the cradle is only a case of draining it (take the return off, stick it in an appropriate container and put 12v on the pump) and disconnecting the hoses though.

But if you're only taking the cradle off you don't need to drain the tank or remove hoses, at least I didn't on my S3. I just propped the tank on bricks and removed the cradle.

Drain holes are a good idea, as is a coat of waxoyl inside. Warm up the frame, needs to be hot enough to make the wax nice and runny. Tape all the holes, pour in the wax and slosh it around to get everything coated.

Did that when it was off before, hot summers day so Waxoyl was nice and runny (stand in a bucket of hot water if its not), but that bit that's peeled back is surprisingly dry!

ETA stand the can of Waxoyl in the bucket, you don't need to stand in it

I welded plates over the open ends of the box section on mine, coated the inside with waxoil, then fitted grommets in the access holes after fitting, so it is completely sealed. Time will tell if its successfull.
