not sure how to put this into words but here goes,
my car has started to make a noise like the one you get when you put your head out of a window at speed kind of wind baffle
the noise gets louder as you get faster
the car runs fine its just instead of a rumble i get a "windy" noise im guessing ive got an air leak some where maybe???
i know its a bit vague(sp?) but any help would be grand ta

I think you are saying it gets louder with road speed and not with engine revs?
If so, when I first picked up my S I could not believe the wind noise at speed, it appeared to be coming from the drivers door mirror.
I stuck my hand out and deflected the air around the wing mirror, low and behold no noise. I susequently found that to get the best view out of the mirror the previous owner had moved the wing mirror 'body' out a bit as the electric adjustment for the mirror (inside the body) itself is a little bit short of perfect vision.
I put the mirror back to its normal positon, noise gone. I wonder if its just your wing mirror, give it a try. Yours is a S3 so I think the mirrors are the same.

Have you checked for exhaust leaks under the car?

You say that noise gets louder as you go faster (infers road speed?) and later say noise is directly linked to revs (infers engine speed rather than road speed?)Which is it?

Problems linked only to road speed regardless of revs (ie which gear you are in)suggests transmission line of prop, diff, drive shafts etc. But noise sounds odd for that. Problems linked to revs could be from the alternator which runs at higher speed than engine.

What about some part of body work, trim or underbody that is being deflected or distorted by the wind? As the speed increases the loading is increased, which in turn increases the deflection, which increases the wind noise?

Another thought, it could be as simple as the lack of a rubber plug in a drain hole in the footwell floor or anywhere else for that matter?
I cannot offer comment on the aerodynamics of an "S", but perhaps something like this might set up some strange whooshing noises?

as i go faster in any gear the revs get higher and so does the noise i tried putting a cloth over the exhaust pipes and the engine didnt cut out does this mean theres a leak????
i have romoved and replaced the drain plug lately so i will check this as well
i wish i could descibe the noise better!!

ps the only reason im thinking engine and or exhaust is because say if im coasting at fifty theres no noise but if im using the pedal at fifty then its there?!

its not the air intake noise is it? have you still got your air filter in place..??

(or is it a different type of noise?)
