Water Pump Gasket 2.9 V6

Evening all, a cry for help I'm afraid.

Does anyone have a water pump gasket for the 2.9 V6? If so would it be possible to scan it and send me the picture please? I'm in the process of changing the water pump (I have a brand new spare that's been in the back of my garage for some time - minus gasket) and I have discovered that the gasket is only available with a new water pump!

I don't really feel like buying another pump just for the gasket! Have checked "the bay of dreams" and gaskets for 2.8 are available but they're different. Alternatively I could get one as part of a bottom end (oooer missus) gasket set, but they're not wonderfully cheap either!

The solution is to fabricate my own out of gasket paper and it would be made MUCH easier if I had a stencil. A scan or photocopy would do as long as the scale is 1:1.

Hi mate

Just changed my pump on v8 at weekend. Was successful apart from 1 bolt shear (see my post earlier). Anyway, I looked around at gaskets and it would seem these type of products can replace the actual gasket by itself. Sure everyone's got an opinion on it. I used this plus the gasket for total completeness though.

Thanks for this. I'd probably smear it over the gasket to make sure I got a good seal! - A bit like the instant gasket stuff that's been around for years I guess?

This is what I'd try......

measure dia. of impellor and cut hole to suit in gasket paper (cornflake box), lay gasket paper on pump and press all around the edges, this should imprint a pattern on the paper this can then be cut out with knife/scissors or tap around the edges with a small hammer and the relativly sharp edge of the casting will cut the paper. Bolt holes can be cut very neatly this way with a small ball pein hammer or poked through with a screwdriver or so on.

Getting the inner edges correct is the main thing, excess on the outside will add strength (less risk of tearing) can be tidied up when fitted.

Personnally I wouldn't use "instant gasket" or similar and no proper gasket but thats just me

Thanks phillpot, that's exactly what I would do if the water pump and car were here and not in a garage 10 miles away! - Just thought it might save me some time if someone had one lying round that they could scan.

As for the instant gasket type stuff the only time I use it is in a very thin smear on gasket paper. As long as it's suitable for the application of course, obviously it's different strokes for different folks. I tend to find it sticks the gasket slightly making reassembly that little bit easier, can be a bit of a pain getting the old stuff off though....

I prefer hylomar blue for sticking gaskets on, rather than 'instant gasket' stuff. It's much nicer to deal with when you come to take things apart. (I'd also suggest using the cardboard as a template and making the final gasket from a sheet of gasket paper rather than fitting the cardboard one. Cardboard doesn't do well with long term immersion in water.)
