fuel pump relay

that's what i thought until it melted going to the classic Le Man last year
i had 2 spares 1 worked for about 300 yards the other one got me home but made
lots of strange noises the pins look the same but something must be different
got 2 from tvr car parts when i got home all fine now and still got 1 spare
if you get a ford one i would test it before going on i long trip a French motorway
is not the best place to find they don't work

i found with mine that the wires were loose in the the block that the relay pushed
in to so when you push the relay in it pushed the wire out the back of the block and was not connecting properly
which made it get hot and melt the rely, if you can get to the back of it check this as you push it in i pushed the wire in from the back with a small screwdriver it worked on mine

One of the problems with this type of contact is that if the terminal gets hot the contact relaxes and loses the clamping load. It looks fine but hasn't got anything like the original current carrying capacity. Inserting and removing relays can make the problem worse. There's no easy way to detect it because there's no practical way to feel the force required to insert an individual contact as you insert the relay, short of making up your own test tool and then trying each terminal separately. Pushing the contact out and re-tightening it helps a bit but doesn't seem like a complete fix, I suspect the metal itself is being softened/annealed and loses its springiness.
