Drive Shaft Leak - urgent advice needed

Hi guys, Need some advice here.

Took the car to the garage yesterday before driving to Spain and well,
rear drive shaft ( I think this is the correct name drive shaft ) has a leak.

I got an stimated fix of 500 euros,around 400£, I think.
It also has a leak in the fuel pump.

Can this be easily replaced/fix ? If so, do you know where I can order them?

I suspect you mean differential rather than driveshaft, the differential is where the driveshafts to into on one end with the other end going to the rear wheels. The diff can leak from 3 places (normally) the front oil seal or the two where each driveshaft fits in. In eaither case the part is cheap but the labour is going to be the majority of the cost - parts should be available from any Ford dealer or old style motorfactors. If leak is small I'd suggest you check the oil level in the diff and then drive back to spain and fix it later, it is unlikely to run dry in one journey unless the leak is serious.

Not the clearenst picture but the differential is the metal lump in the middle of this picture in the centre of the car and just to the left of the fuel tank.



With regards to the fuel leak you MUST fix this. But you really need to know where the leak it, what it is on and what needs to be changed to fix it. It could range from a new fuel pump to a 20p O seal and anything in between. But this MUST be fixed before you drive it as petrol, fibreglass and fire go together very easily!!

Thank you very much for your quick response.
the leak from the diff doesnt look very serius, after a week without moving the car it was like a few coins size so I'll check that in Spain as you said that probably is gonna be cheaper then here in Ireland.

The fuel leak I think its not from the fuel pump itself so I'll check everything you mentioned and will fixed before traveling. I dont want to set Trevor on fire.

I will update the post tomorrow as soon as I have checked it out.

Yours a 2.8?

that picture is the 2.9 set up, fuel pump just in front to the right.

If the rubber boot on a driveshaft is split, that can also be a source of grease dripping/flinging about. When it's old, the grease can get quite runny and look like thick dirty oil.

Hopefully 'just one or two drops' means the leak is tiny, but it might also mean the diff is now empty. So, unless you're sure, check the diff oil level before you go any distance. Is it definitely the diff that is leaking, and not a split CV joint gaiter?

Davewelly told me that the diff was recently replaced. I sent him a mail to verify it but no response as of yet.

I'll ask the mechanic to check diff oil levels and the joints tomorrow.

Diff oil levels are being checked and the problem seems to be one of the joints.
I dont know anything yet about the fuel leak. Finger crossed.

Finally, I think all my probs have been resolved.
Fuel leak fixed, also diff oil levels and new 50/50 antifreeze/water added.

Ready to hit a long way to Spain.
