Pipercross air filter warning

I was checking all the usual items for the MOT the other day and decided to remove the air filter to make sure that it was OK. The end had almost parted company from the rest and the foam inside had started to disintegrate. I guess the decaying foam would be sucked through the inlet tract..... I ordered a new filter from Racetech (on special offer apparently) and a little breather filter from ebay to replace the long pipe - as advised on the forum.

Just advice to check your S2/S3 filter if it is some years old.

Likewise, the inner layer of foam was disintegrating to dust !

whats the benifit of changing the little filter and doing away with the long hose ?

looks tidyer tidier more tidy and any fumes/oil mist excetera are not fed back to gunge up the air flow sensors

Ebay. I bought a cone shaped one with 10mm inlet for well under a tenner. Mine was from auto silicone hoses. I followd Phillpots' advice to use ebay rather than the High Street. You can different coloured elements as well.

Those little filters are designed to be used for the inlet of a positive crankcase ventilation system. The small hose running out to the air filter housing is the breather outlet. If you fit a little filter to that then the filter element will clog up with the oil mist carried along with the crankcase gases and pretty soon your breather will be blocked. The breather outlet should be connected either directly into the intake tract between the throttle and the air filter, or downstream of the throttle via a PCV check valve, or into a catch tank. What you don't really want to do is bung the breather outlet up with a little filter, because when they're oiled up they don't flow worth a damn.

Any filter should be checked on a regular basis, when every you service your car really.
The average filter lasts about 50 000 miles or are replaced every 20 000 miles.
So I think you are doing Pipercross an injustice as maintaining your vehicle is not there problem.
I have a PX filter n my car have had for the last 3 years, I have no issues at all.

Im actually looking at a VENOM kit now.

My point was not to rubbish the pipercross filter but to do as you suggest and maintain the car! This was the first chance I have had to check the filter since I bought the car and the filter could possibly be 20 years old. Advice aimed at anyone else who has bought a car recently.
