anyone planning on doing a noise test in the new hindhead tunnel?

Just wondered. Seems a shame not to after all that money and waiting. 1.2 miles of tunnel!!! It has to be done - perhaps with a visit to fernhurst TVR!

I understand the speed limit is 40 MPH and they have fitted average speed cameras!!!!!!!!!!

Happy days!!! The fun police haven't ruined it completely. Despite the suggestion its 40mph - it aint!!! They have the ability to control just like M25 but it was set to national speed limit today so absolutely deafening and quite a few kids winding down windows to listen too!! (All caught on video). Noted a nice tuscan and mustang doing the same. Went to fernhurst TVR to have a chat with the guys in the article in octane. Not sure about the violet 4.3 Griff!!

Hmm, what an area for a southern meet and run out I can just imagine that tunnel full of tiv`s.

Good idea. Nice looking S by the way, on your profile. Assume you've moved from Barry?. There's a few S's knocking about down here, but not sure if are regulars on here or not. The good news also, is the tunnel is open now in both directions. Good pubs and roads out to fernhurst (albeit there's too many blue rinsers on route in their honda jizz and civics) - didn't know if you go further there a marco pierre white gaff but he wasn't about when I asked for him! (Probably doing a knorr add). As you say - a good day out and the A3 is good for spirited driving.

Hi Deeman, I still live in South Wales, but I`m from the IOW and still have family on the Island, so a little detour wouldn`t go amiss, or drive to the tunnels for a weekend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRWu7eykTbs this would sound awesome for a mile

Enjoy those mid Wales roads, they are great, the Brecon Beacons are tremendous too. I`ll give you a shout when I`m up near the new tunnel .

When the cerb is back on the road I will do a run through (hopefully this week) and at a suitably early hour so you don't feel guilty for saving the average 40mph till a third of the 'average time' having passed the first camera and sat there not moving. Keen for a meet and run too

There was absolutely no signage stating an average 40mph. It had national speed limit signs up today. Jeez, why do I feel I've missed something and the ol, ticket is winging its way to me shortly.j

Right - im settling this one as pistonheads have set this hare running from their article. I checked my home video again and again - Nada, No 40mph restriction today - just national speed limit signs, Also went onto Surrey news website and it would appear they restricted it just after the opening ceremony and then it reverted to 70mph. Heres the cut & paste

"Opening times for the northbound tunnel will be made on Friday (July 29), to allow for crews to remove cones and ramps and bring both tunnels back up to dual-carriageways. A 40 miles per hour speed limit remained in place for several hours after the ceremony, but was increased to 70 miles per hour by the end of the day.

So guys - stop being negative and get the TVRs fired up.

Before they drop it to 50, and they will after the first incident occurs in there that could have happened anywhere on the A3, little bunny rabbit run over, insect mashed against someones windscreen etc, etc, etc.

Yes I take your point - I know they are all tree huggers round here or the blue rinse brigade - but I'm not wishing it before it happens. The A3 has always been a bit of dragstrip so let's hope they see sense. (The aim after all is to reduce a bottleneck, not create another)

Took the S down there yesterday morning with some other PHers from the area. Amazing tunnel and sounds incredible, my S is loud but was completely drowned out by the Cerbs and Tuscans! Definitely a national speed limit with average cameras.

Hi Pete. Nice to meet you yesterday and hope you enjoyed that run back through the Pirbright Bends, shame that Fabia spoiled the fun. Gifdy is the friend of mine restoring his V8S. Check his posts and you'll find a great thread on the build.

I can vouch for the HH Tunnel, it's great fun. Must have been 40+ cars there yesterday for the meet with TVR well represented as usual! Plenty of noisy Tuscan's and Cerb's as well as Chim's, a Griff and Pete in his S2 and the track prepared Sag in red with yellow stripe. All that lot made quite a racket!

Its like conducting a highly tuned mechanical orchestra - a sweet cachophany of exhaust bellow. Would have loved to have been part of that as well. Let's hope the tree huggers don't impose a noise limit too. Would love to run along on next outing. Pete

Not wanting to spoil anybody's fun but surely if as soon as the tunnel opens groups of car enthusiasts go "hooning" through there trying to make as much noise as possible (however nice the noise may be) then the police will step in and put a stupidly low speed limit in place! they won't want that sort of thing going on on their patch will they. As I say not wanting to be a boring s*d but can anyone else see my point?
