They do exactly what the name suggests. I have a Rover version, and I had to fit some extra pins and wires to the ECU plug to connect it (which is why I know my way around the plug), and you will probably have to do the same.

If you don’t have the diagnostic plug in the loom (fitted to cat cars only?) and find you have to hard wire the reader to the ECU plug, you might like to consider wiring it via a 4-pin connector so that you can easily remove and re-connect the reader. See photo – the white plastic connector is the one I mean. Bought from Maplins.
