Evening all, well maybe a few hardcore members missing due to SCH. Had a good drive out in the S today it drove spot on until I got home and selected reverse and when I did it crunched a little. I then did it again in the usual way by selected second first but still it crunched. Forward gears seem fine. Bit miffed as used reverse a few times today when parking and it was fine. I then checked the master cylinder and there is no loss of fluid. Not been underneath yet to check slave operation. Can anyone offer advice as to why its crunching, hope its not the beginning of the end of the clutch! Car has done 73k and to my knowldege (have all history from day one) it hasn't had the original replaced. TIA Damon

Master cylinder design means that it can leak past seals but not lose and fluid. If slave is leaking then fluid will be lost, but not necessarily that much. If seals have never been done then I'd start there.

I believe that reverse doesn't have synchromesh so any issues with the clutch not releasing fully would be evident in reverse first because of crunching but all the forward gears would be better due to the synchro. I had this problem which developed into not being able to put it into first while stationary. I had a leaky slave (and master but the slave was the issue).

Personally I changed both cylinders rather than just the seals.

I can't remember where I read it, but I was told it was best to select 1st gear before reverse and that stops the graunching.

Mmm thanks for the advice not had the S out as been decorating again. Next time I get it out will try all gears, best not do it in the garage or I may end up in the house if you know what I mean. Can't understand it as there is defo no fluid loss, unless its the seals as advised that sounds plausible or maybe air in system from when I fitted the flexi hose but its been fine for over 100 miles. Apologies for my faux pas on SCH it was Newark this weekend SCH next..Doh!
