Discussion
I would appreciate your comments on whether you feel spraying an S a different colour to its original one would effect the re-sale value. Also, would it put off buyers at all?
i appreciate that it will also depend on the cars original colour and its "new" colour but I have in mind a conservative starmist blue colour as the replacement.
Also, can anyone give me an approximate price for a full respray? Does anyone know whether its a simple process to change the V5 to show the new colour?
sorry for all the questions, interested to hear any replies though
cheers

Okay I can answer some of your questions.
For a body off respray (you supply body on its own) then you can be as lucky as £500 or as unlucky as £1500.
However you will probably want to turn up with the car in tact, have them mask it up and spray it while in one piece. I would expect this to be £800 to £2200 dependant on who you use.
Make sure the person doing it has the ability and experience in spraying fibreglass rather than metal. it needs baking in a different way than metal panels.
They should also sand down the old body to create a key, this will add £200 or so to the bill if you dont do it.
The V5 is a simple application to change the body colour by post. In rare cases they will ask you to visit your local office for someone to see the car & check chasis number etc.
As for value or re-sale prospects. Unless its a totally original unmarked concourse winner then I wouldnt expect it to make much difference. These cars are 10 years old and so have lost most of the perceived depreciation value and are priced on the value of their parts / what someone will pay.
Hope this helps

If you're able to do a lot of the prep work yourself, that will cut the price down.
Obviously , the standard of prep work ultimatly dictates the final finish.
If you've not had any experience of body preperation, just the stripping of trim etc would help with the price.
I've done a fair bit with bodywork over the years, and I found a really good bodyshop which whenever I want any work done I talk to them first and discuss the price dependant on the condition I bring the car down to them, i.e. trim removed/in primer/body off etc.
If you are into a bit of DIY, then find a repitible paint shop and have a chat with them.
Cheers,
Dave.

I take it you've found a car but your not totally happy with the car's colour? and are in the process of pricing up a respray to see if it's viable?
Personally I'd wait for one that is the colour you can live with before I even considered this route, but hey thats me.
I hope all goes well.

I had my S1.5 done in stages prior to the winter lay-up last year and then early April this year. The bonnet had a screwdiver type scratch in it and lots of ripples, also the underside of the doors had been sprayed before but not very well. Cost was £1250 ish and was carried out by a recommend garage where I live(starmist blue). Job was immaculate, but not surprising since he had a gleaming Griffiths in the garage exactly the same colour as my S. Nr Andover.
spot on Harry. It was an idea mentionned when I had a beer with a fellow pistonhead earlier in the week. Hadn't thought of it myself but, dependant on the price, could see the plus sides (immaculate finish from day one of owning, any choice of colour etc).
Having got some advice from you chaps I am now thinking that it may be wise to await the "right" one.
PS - mentionned to the fellow pistonhead that I was rather discouraged by my search to date and was toying with the idea of an Alfa Spider........then he started his Chimaera and the pendulum swung back to TVR!
