My S2 had a hydraulic clutch and I expect your S1 does too. In that case it's self adjusting and doesn't need adjusting in the way cable release clutches do. But you can still get hydraulic problems that need repairs. Can you confirm you have a hydraulic clutch? Is the clutch reservoir full?
Leaks around the master cylinder which tend to show up in the footwell or around the slave under the car
this page on my website will tell you all you need to know and the slave cylinder is clearly pictured about 2/3 down the page (click view for a larger picture). Just be aware that the gearbox will come out like this on an S3 and S4 but it is engine and gearbox out time on the S1 and S2 I believe due to chassis differences.

Good news is I reckon this isn't a need for a new clutch, just seals for master and/or slave cylinder, or replacements for either. much cheaper and easier to do. Have a look for leaks, if it's the slave cylinder it will be all over the exhaust probably and easily confused with an engine oil leak.
Hi, I had the same symptoms a year or so ago. I changed the slave cylinder for a Land Rover item from Rimmer Bros in Lincoln (about £10) and changed the Master cylinder seals. Totally sorted the problem. Interestingly I had no apparent leaks from the system before the repairs.
Good luck. Andy

There are two seals at the master cylinder - if the internal seals fails, the clutch won't work but you won't lose fluid. If the external seal fails you will lose fluid but it may not be obvious because the carpet will soak it up. If the slave seals go this always results in a fluid leak.
