The connector fits on the larger nut on the coil and the metal tab is attached to the coil bracket (ie earthed).

I thought it was the cold start resistor but it is a capacitor (says 1 microfarad on it)

Does it run without it? I cannot recall seeing a capacitor on any coil like that.

Probably added to stop interference to the radio. Any good spare store (so not halfords then) should be able to sort you a replacement, might not look like that one (usually cylindrical). I'd turn on the radio and see if you need it, probably can't hear it when you are going along anyway.

Ahhh ok so not essential then! I never bother with the radio so I can at least run the car without it.

I'm currently stripping the insulation tape off the wiring loom that goes into the passenger side bulkhead as half the wires have melted together after sitting on the exhaust manifold. I hoped that this capacitor wasn't needed because then I can put the coil back in and test to see if i have found the problem.

I hate intermittent electrical gremlins, they are a right to fix!

As said above, it's a radio interference suppressor.
