screen/printer-why are mine so different?

I had, and still have at times, similar problems. I went through the basic calibration process, both on the screen and printer, which helped.
But, when printing at home, I'll often knock the exposure up by a stop to get a print I'm happy with.
However, I would have thought if you use the Auto Fix on the software (I use Photoshop Elements and Aperture), then you should get a correctly exposed print from any of the high street or on line print services. But when deciding on which one to use, I had the same photo printed at several of them, they still varied alot.
I have even had several copies of the same picture, from the same print service done at the same time, appear to be exposed differently.
I realise it doesn't answer your question O/P, but it just shows the inconsistency on the printing side.

I think my exposures are probably ok, if not, not far off. I don't know enough about histograms ro read them unfortunately.
So where do I begin looking for improvements? I do have a problem printing straight from Ps because of the snide inks I use. A box appears saying it can't print as there's no ink. (the usual manufacturer acting like a child scenario!)I'm also unaware of any difference in the results from the genuine ink I used to use.
So has anyone got time to draw up a check list for me please?
