Any C1 users on here?
I'm trialling it at the moment as an option against LR3 and finding it a bit slow in comparison with library/cataloguing. Admittedly I'm running it over a network rather than against local NEFs, but at 1.5tb I dont have the space locally to do that. The way I index is that I import everything to a folder from the camera (Shoots) then have sub folders with a name and a date on them
Is there some initial scan that I'm not doing or something? I've pointed it at the Shoots folder on the network drive and tried to start an initial edit but it seems to just hang
Using 6.something if relevent

I use C1 Pro but not the latest version. Set destination folder, drag the files into the thumbnail preview bar, wait a bit while they render.
Tweak as required, process. It works faster than I do so by the time I've got to the last photo, the rest are all sitting in the destination folder ready to ship. (Try doing that in LR)
To clear down ready for the next job, Ctrl/A delete sends them to trash, then empty trash

Different horse for a different course. C1 doesn't do library or cataloguing as LR. I'm using the latest version so I can't comment on Simpo's workflow (not even sure I understand what he wrote? But I believe he's using an antique PC version, so that may explain it
). When you first point to a folder of pics, it does take time to create thumbnails and previews and a folder with hundreds will take time before the program runs smoothly.
I personally don't work with libraries but just treat every job individually and create a 'session' when I shoot directly into C1, or create a session and import files from cards into the capture folder. I find working with sessions great, everything is organised, trashed files go to the trash folder rather than your computer trash so you have to work a little harder to really trash something, a safety net! The thought of having every job accessible via a library, somehow, fills me with dread. I much prefer to keep things broken down, but your needs maybe different.
The strengths of C1 is the quality of final output. Do your own comparisons, process RAWs in both and compare, look at the reds in particular. Some of the strengths of C1 are in things like simultaneous multiple outputs, i.e. CMYK Tiffs and sRGB JPGs (plus whatever else you may want), with different resolutions. Maybe not relevant to you, but I use it all the time, plus I output to CMYK which LR can't do. Other things, more elegant copy and paste adjustments, local and global, very powerful colour editor, local adjustments with layer masks, plus many others... check out the video tutorials: http://www.youtube.com/user/PhaseOneDK#p/c/2B41924...
LR, like Aperture are good, especially if you want to catalogue, but if you want to squeeze every ounce of quality from a file, it's worth investing some time in learning the qualities of C1.

Ace answer, thanks! Kind of where I'm coming at it from, I'm finding that LR isnt getting the same detail levels that C1 can - there's something it seems to drag out that no matter what I do in LR, I just cant find it. More recent work has been beauty and thats needing a lot of work in post, so getting it through a RAW converter in the best possible shape is vital, ACR just dont cut it really. Raw Therapee/RAW Magick are great for one-off's but dont have the same support/scale as C1 from the looks of it
In my head C1 could catalogue things as well in the same vein as LR - I dont know where I'd got that from

It's 3.7.9; I think the software you used when you were showing me the basics years ago was 3.7.1
).
I think our workflows are pretty similar; you call it a 'session' whereas I just shove the buggers in because I only work on one job at a time.(One other thing is that if you do what Bacardi says, it will work and it will be right)
As I understand it the newer versions of C1 do a lot more with the image when you import it than the older ones did. The advantages are snappier handling when they are imported, but longer times to do that importing. Having said that, version 6.1.1 is much faster than the version I was using before (3.7.9) when shooting tethered.
It's not really designed for cataloging or browsing huge sets of images so that might be your problem. It is an excellent RAW converter though, and I wouldn't want to use anything else.
Hmm... doughnuts...

Ace work chap!
~I'm struggling a little with it now though, it's trying to do something with a system folder and getting a lot of hangs/force quits still.
I gather I may well need to change my workflow, which at the moment is to copy the card to 2 network drives, import into LR and start editing. LR indexes my primary drive, holds adjustments on it and I mess about, export to PS and then save as a sub folder in both drives.
The way sessions seem to want to work is for me to import locally, start a new session, work on it then export it out to a file location of my choice, deleting what I dont want to keep locally.
Where I'm not agreeing with it is how I then export out to PS and save my file choices, but I guess I need to work out whether getting what I want from C1 is worth changing the way I do things.

Although ACR has the same colour engine as LR, the interface is archaic. Personally I don't like LR either, having to switch from room to room etc, but as I said, it's a different horse and designed more for general users.Another one which used to get very good reports as to ultimate image quality is Raw Developer: http://www.iridientdigital.com/products/rawdevelop...
But I didn't like, again seems to have an archaic interface and maybe you can squeeze more out, but it was way to much like hard work when C1 looks great straight out of the box.
If you're doing beauty, you also have skin tone control under the colour editor, which you can apply to local areas with adjustment layers. You can also apply local moire control as well should you have some dodgy fabric in shot. Hopefully they will introduce some local blur/noise reduction/median/dust and scratches adjustments in future releases.

The bit of workflow I certainly don't do is 'select all, delete, empty trash'

.In some ways I like the simplicity of 3x (I think I started with 2.9, simpler still and no DSLR support) but it is a bit antiques roadshow compared to 6x. They are romping along with the development which does make it more complex, but at the same time more powerful. Apart from heavy retouching, PS is becoming redundant for me.
It really is much easier to use with two monitors
When I first installed v6.1 it was crashing every five minutes. I updated to v6.1.1 and tweaked the graphics card settings and it's been rock solid ever since. Have a look at the Phase One forum to see if anyone else is experiencing similar issues to you.
There's also some info there on workflow and organising sessions. I'm not going to try and advise because I haven't entirely got my own head around it yet.

Cheers! It seems that the best way for me to use it is to start up a new session each time I want to work on a project, give it a name and set the source/destination folder. Import that from local files and start working on it. Save the edits from PS into a new folder and start again on the next shoot.

So I've started a new session and doing an import, but by God it's slow! Currently importing image 9 of 705 with 25 hours to go. Those Tangfastics might not last that long tbh

I think I'll uninstall/reinstall as there seems to be some issues with cof files from reading the forums, see if that speeds things up a bit

That's only within C1; the original RAWs and derivatve JPGs are safely stashed in their original fodlers, I mean folders.
.(kept the typo as I quiet liked 'fodler')

25 hours! Mine will import and render 600 previews in about 10 minutes. Mind you it does use all the pooter's resources; other programmes are very reluctant to open so open them before you import!
I also use Tangfastics to help me through the edit... in fact my dentist warned me off them.
