Did I buy the right lens? (18-270 Tamron)

Hi

Am planning on doing a bit of youth football photography and popped into jesses for some advice; walked out with a Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II vc for a tad under £350. The chap seemed very knowledgable and helpful.

My camera is a D3100 Nikon and this lens will solely be used for youth football, my question is, have i been sold the best option of a compromise? and for youth football do I need one which goes from 18 to 270? - No offence to the salesman.

Any advice appreciated as I need to return to jesses as the lens in the Nikon specified box is actually a Canon fit lens, dooh...

Not used the lens I cant say for sure, but I think you've done alright for what you wanted it for.

I guess if it was just solely for reach I'd have been tempted to sacrifice the wide end and go with the Nikon 70-300 with maybe a 1.4 TC on it - it'd be a bit slow to start with. The superzooms can be a bit of a handful with image quality, I guess if you were happy with the tests you did of it then you've got what you wanted.

Worst case if it's as new you shouldnt lose too much on t'ebay

Wrong mount lens in wrong box. Ha nice.
Best I had was a customer complaining about foreign manual and European plug.
We have no idea how we ended up with what looks like a German bound camera.

Does the autofocus work with the N3100?

The chap was real nice but i've since got home and read a few reviews about this specific lens and the slow auto focus on moving objects etc etc which is exactly what I want it for.

Have a dslr mag at home which reviews a 55-300 Nikon for £350 and it gets a glowing review, Jesses stock it so may go and see about swapping it.

A super zoom is never the right lens for anything. Its always going to be compromised.

You almost always wont need less than 70mm at a footy game. 200mm gets you OK pics around one goal area or to the center of the pitch from the half way line (but no closeups).

Pro's will use one or two supertele primes ( 400 or 600) and a second zoom (70-200 or 100-400) depending on light levels.

If you want fast focusing you will want AF-S lenses ( or sigmas HSM).

Just an update...

Have swapped my 18-270 Tamron lens for the Nikon 55-300 DX VR.

Jessops very happy to exchange. Bought on-line deal and collected in store (saved £70!)

Yes that's the one although that price from Jacobs is decent, I paid £249 for it which I was pretty pleased with.
