It's where FlickR selects 500 photos a day that are the most interesting, after using this tool I see you've had quite a few selected

Ah that tool tells you what number in the line up they were too Which explains why this shot when crazy..

So is 'interestingness' an automated procedure (E.g. views/(comments+favs)= Interestingosity Value )
Or are there people going around nominating new pics?
