Nikkor 50mm 1.8

I have only the 18-105 kit that came with my D90 body currently.
Was messing around with a friends D90 body with the above attached over the weekend and the results seemed really nice (mostly portrait shots).
The lens seems to be a cheap addition to the bag, anyone here using it?
At the price they are available for it seems a no brainer, anyone have any reason why not to go for it?

Strongest argument against it is the Nikon 35mm AF-S f/1.8 Not as cheap but quicker, quieter focus and often regarded as a more suitable/ workable focal length on crop sensors.

The 50mm comes in at pretty much pocket change money, was surprised when he told me what it cost.
Will do some more research though, thanks for the suggestion.
Have both Nikon 50mm F1.8 and Sigma 30mm F1.4 on a (crop sensor) D300. Thought the sigma would be fantastic, but I never use it. The last three travel/photography holidays I just haven't taken it. When I've taken both out in the past I quickly find the 30mm gets swapped for the 50, which stays on. I guess my style just matches the 50mm better, but then I do tend to crop quite tight.
50mm is my favourite lens, love it. Will probably sell the 30mm.

Yes, but it doesn't fill the same role on a crop sensor as it does on a 35mm sensor. It goes from being a 'standard' or general purpose lens to more of a portrait lens. So whereas with a 35mm camera you could get by with just a 50mm lens, that's not so much the case with a crop sensor.50mm on a crop sensor is an ideal portrait length....depends what you want it for but personally it works very well for me on my D7000. You already have your kit lens which covers these focal lengths but to me I think a 50mm works very well on a crop for portrait or even for a walkabout lens. Really depends what you photograph...
If my camera had an internal focusing motor, I'd have the 50mm in a heart beat. Lenses don't come much cheaper so it would seem rude not to.
Seeing as my D5000 requires lenses with built in motors though, my choices for a good fast portrait lens are Nikon 35mm 1.8, Sigma 30mm 1.4 or Nikon 50mm 1.4. All are far more money the 50mm 1.8.
