The topic seems to be unpleasant suffering.

I'm obviously not artistic enough to understand why some of these photo's are great.

The impact is more the subject rather than the artistry within the photo.

I totally agree. This is what you exactly get with 'press photos'.

BTW, in the 2nd pic, the horizon isn't even level!!! Grrrrrrrr

with the first - its shock value - could've been anyone in theory

its not captured a "moment"

Even those images (of Egypt), it's all about 'being there', isn't it? To be honest, I think anyone with average knowledge of photography can take these pics (or better) if you can be there at the right moment.

I'm not sure it's supposed to be about a 'moment', instead perhaps about thought provoking images. The girl who's husband sliced off her nose and ears, is certainly thought provoking and serves to illustrate the barbaric practices of, in this case, the talliban.

but what i'm sayin its still not so much so the photographer - there's alot of photographers who could get the same shot etc.

the swan pic for example is at the moment and the guy has had to get his settings right.
