Would a 16-35 F4 Nikkor be ok if I was to attempt to take pictures of the Northern Lights? Would a 50 1.4 be better/worse?

Thinking about going up to Iceland for a short break in early March, hence the question.

Just to clarify, I own the former but not the latter, although I'v been thinking about getting the latter for a few months now and this maybe the excuse I'm looking for!

F4 vs F1.4

Northern lights are very dim, so ideally you'd need as faster lens as possible. So the 50mm F1.4 would do the trick nicely - but, the 50mm might be a teeny bit too telephoto- for the auroa, most people like a big old wide shot of the sky.

I say get the 50mm prime, and at least you'll have the other lens to try out with if you want wider.

Field of view will be better with the 16-35, assuming you're going to put something in as a frame/border/foreground. 50mm isn't generally wide enough for night sky shots IMO.
