Memory card performance

What's the difference in performance between SDHC & SDXC cards?

I'm getting a Canon 550D and understand I need to be looking at class 6 cards or above for video.

Is there anything specifically to avoid, card wise, and what are people using?

Go for a known brand card, and buy from a retriable retailer as there are alot of fake cards about.
Class 6 would be ideal for HD video and high burst photos, but sometimes you may get away with a class 4.

As for SDHC vs SDXC it is all about capacity.

SDSC: 1 MB to 4 GB
SDHC: 4 GB to 32 GB
SDXC: 32 GB to 2 TB

Although I'm using a 7D which uses CF cards I have always used Sandisk Cards which have never failed me.

The ones I use are 30MB/S and I have never had a problem with recording video (something which I don't do often).

I use a transcend class 10 which has been fine for me. SDHC...

www.7dayshop.com usually have the best deals on Sandisk cards etc. As already stated in an earlier post, stay well away from the 'bargain' Sandisk cards on eBay - an awful lot of them are fakes. If it's too cheap, it's unlikely to be the real deal...

Just browsing and found a Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 10 on Amazon for £16.99. Seems pretty good as Jessops want £85 for the sandisk equivalent!

I have one of those. Seems fine. It currently sits in the second slot recording the jpg versions of the images I shoot RAW on the co-located CF card.

Class 10 minimum spec is a long way below what the very best (and most expensive) cards appear to offer but I doubt you could tell the difference in normal use. Might be different for pro use with a critical need every day. I don't think you can knock it at the price even if performance (download (read) speeds are likely to be more obviously slower than write speeds) proved to be a little slower than the top range.

I don't have a video capability to make use of it but as far as I can tell from the specs it should be capable of exceeding the current video output rates for most devices. How long that remains the case is not easy to predict.
