How long to keep negatives for?

Hi
I've got a rather large box of negatives, which amazingly are in some kind of order, so I could probably find one if I had to.
But, The last shot taken in film was in 2006, and most date back way further than that. Bearing in mind most have never been used other than to print the original shot, how long should I keep then for.
Do negatives deterioate with age?
