canon 1000D and 75-300mm lens

1000D is OK but the 75-300 is a pretty poor lens with slow focus. A 55-250IS would be a better choice or a sigma 70-300APO.

IMO 300 is a touch short for wildlife but I assume this is a 'budget effort' so learn some stalking

Excuse the hijack, but London Camera Exchange has a brand new one of these, with aforementioned lens as well as 18-55(?) lens package for sale for £449. Is this a good deal or should I buy a 550d and save up for the zoom lens of my choice?

The 550d has a slightly faster fps. HD video function.
