Just picked up a Canon 10D - Where to get a cheap lens?

So I just picked up a Canon 10D for free, and I just want to try it out with a 'standard' lens. Where would be the best place to look for one? I need to make sure it works first and foremost!

If all goes well, my main photographs will be of cars, 'scenery' and family events.

I know it's an old camera, but I figure it's worth a go to see if I get on with a DSLR.

Fleabay, for a cheap start Kerso, an ebay seller and PHer sells the 50mm f1.8 which will be useful for well less than £100 new.

Would this be sufficient just to try the camera out? I don't want too much outlay in case it doesn't work.

I hadn't even thought of looking on PH for one. That seems pretty cheap, too!

I've just been offered one for free from a fellow PH'er, so I'm sorted for a tester!

The 50 is a great lens to get started with, not much cop for scenery tho.

Remember you cant use any Canon EF-S lenses (like the 18-55, 10-22, 17-55) on the 10D but all the 3rd party ones will work fine.

The one I'm being given is the 18-55, but it's an EF, so it should work fine.

The 18-55s are usually EF-S, one to check there.

The 18-55 EF-S doesn't fit the 10D as the mirror is larger than the later models. It is possible to modify the EF-S so it will fit.

The guy I sold my old 10D to did this.

As said thats likely an EF-S but it is possible to modify them, if its been used on a 10D before it'll be ok else it physicaly wont mount without a tweak.

I also picked up a 10D this week, came with a 24-200 USM canon lens that seems to have quite a nice range.

I'm going to pick up a 50mm 1.8 lens and then just try and get used to using a SLR again before buying any further kit.

Also got another 10D today, but believe it to be faulty. Not sure yet, but it comes up with a C6C code I think it was, on the LCD display.

I would take it to a camera store and ask to try on one of the lenses... a good starter lens is the nifty fifty (50mm f1.8). If you want a cheap zoom lens too, you could pursue a 18-55mm.
