Submiting photos to a newspaper

I took some photos while being stuck for hours on the M1 today.

They're not too bad so I thought I'll give it a try and I've sent small copies to the popular London newspapers on editorial emails I could find on the websites asking would they be interested in using them. Is that how one should proceed? I've never done it before.

I didn't watermark it, the copyright details are in metadata.

Shall I be expecting fiver if they'll use it or just be proud and happy?

If usable they'll probably print them, last time I did similar they just ran them and that was that.

The time there was bad floods here a few years ago, I took some pictures on my phone of the floods. Sent them to one of the Northern Irish TV channels to try and get them on the website..

Got a nice "Thanks to Conor D for these pictures" on the front page, and the next day they were on the 6 o'clock news..

I was pretty chuffed..
