Help with Canon EOS 1000D Digital camera

Hi, ive decided to splash out and get a DSLR,
After reading alot of reviews ive narrowed it down to the 1000D,
Im yet to buy it but its the one i want, im new to DSLR's so is this camera ok for newbies and any tips would be much appriciated, it will be used just for general use, nothing to crazy..

Generally considered a good starting point DSLR camera.
Only thing I would advise is get a reasonably sized memory card and get out there and take as many shots as you can. You’ll soon find out what works for you and what doesn’t
The joy (or curse) of digital is you can afford to experiment without incurring undue costs.

Yes it will be fine. DSLR design is pretty refined by now, such that any of them can be used by a 'newbie'. They all have automatic modes so they can be used as easily as a compact camera.

The 1000D is the bottom of Canon's range and is a few years old now. The next model up has more features that you may find useful now or in the future, but then that statement applies to pretty much any camera.

Excellent, thanks for the advise, i did look at the 550d but its a big jump in price and the 1000d looked confusing enough, your both right, esp about getting out there and just shooting and see what works best..

just a quick one, im still trying to figure out the difference between 'Rebel and non-rebel...

Have a look at the 450D, it's part way between the 1000 and 550. I have a 450D and it's a brilliant starter. There are some great deals about at the moment. Argos outlet on EBay were doing it with kit lens for about £330

I believe all Canon ****D and ***D are called rebels.

Canon's lower-end models are badged 'Rebel' in North America and 'Kiss' in Japan, instead of a three or for digit number followed by 'D' (the 1000D's other names are Rebel XS and Kiss F). If you are buying in the UK, my understanding is that Rebel and Kiss badged cameras are grey imports whose warranties are not valid here.

I have the 1000d and find it very good. There is also a "dummies guide to" book out for them too which I got.

I've got a 1000D here - and have had it for over 2 years now. It's brilliant for my needs. i started a basic course at the local college, and have not hit any issues with needing functions that are not there but exist on the more expensive cams.
the auto button takes care of most, but I've started to move away from that and it's simple enough to understand.

so yep 1000D is good for newbies
