Can someone recommend me a book on digital photography?

I have an older Nikon D50 SLR and I would like to learn how to use it a bit better. I am a complete novice when it comes to photography, can anyone recommend me a book that can teach me how to use the camera and take better pictures?

At the moment i tend to leave it on the auto setting!

Understanding Exposure, by Bryan Peterson.


It's not an instruction manual on what settings to use in what circumstances to guarantee results, but it's an excellent book for understanding the fundamentals of exposure, etc.

Digital Photography Masterclass by Tom Ang - it covers the ground from basics to pretty advanced concepts. Crucially, it is beatifully printed with LOADS of pics to illustrate each of the points being made.

+3 it is an excellent book really useful and covers all skill levels and as stated has some lovely pictures.

Bought this after a recommendation on here. It's maybe not the only book you'd ever need though. Would recommend a magic lantern book for your camera to compliment it.

Double ditto! Bought after a recommendation here and think it's great, although it's not a 'how-to' for your camera, more the principles. Have asked for a couple of his other books for Xmas, so fingers crossed!
