Digital Camera movie recording time

I'm looking to replace my Sony Sureshot which won't shoot any more

I'm keen to get a digital which will record movie - but I need a camera which will record up to 45 mins, otherwise I have to get a video camera as well

All the manufacturers are a bit coy about recording times - does anyone know if there's a camera out there which will do this?

I have a Panasonic TZ7 and that just seems to record for ever, I have a 16gb memory card in it.

got a FUJIFILM FinePix F50fd, it records for 30 mins and then allows u to re-record, like it better than a dedicated movie camera, 16 GB card as well as shoot in raw

Another thing to check for, unless of course it doesn't matter to you, is whether the camera continuously autofocuses and allows zooming whilst recording movies.

Really? Are they not subject to the 30min limit most EU market Panasonics are?

The Canon SLR's that have a video function will keep going for as long as you've got on your memory card.

my compact camera does not allow zoom once played, the camera quoted allows zoom to macro and out to infinity, it really makes the difference, plus of course allows stills photos

I was under the impression that cameras had to be limited to a certain recording time in order not to be classed as camcorders (to avoid higher import/export duties?)

Canons EOS 7D and 5d are limited to a maximum of twelve minutes in the high definition 1080p and 720p modes, or 24 minutes in the standard definition VGA mode

Hmm, that's strange as I have an in car video I recorded on my 7D from castle combe last month that's longer than that.

Edit: Just done some investigating and found this which would explain how I got a much longer video at Combe;

I should add there was lots of black in my video too, due to my inability to hold the camera up enough at racing speed and therefore getting lots of dash and floor shots!

Those 12/24 minute durations are just estimates, but are due to the FAT32 file system limitation to a maximum 4GB file size.

I tried it out today and the TZ7 will only record for 15min in one go, it has then to be restarted to continue filming.
It seemed a lot longer than that when holding the camera by hand.
